Joliet slip and fall injury lawyerWinter is a good time to stay indoors and get cozy by the fire with your loved ones. However, we all must keep commitments during the colder months, and these will require us to go outside at one point or another. Slip and fall accidents can happen to anyone at any time of the year, but they are more likely in the winter months, due to slippery surfaces caused by snow and ice.

According to the National Safety Council, there are 25,000 daily slip and fall accidents in the United States. In 2014 alone, there were over 40,000 workplace injuries as the result of snow, sleet, or ice. There is a chance for a slip or fall anytime there is a wet surface indoors in a location such as a store, or outside on a sidewalk or parking lot.

Under the Illinois Snow And Ice Removal Act, residence owners are encouraged, but not required, to clear sidewalks of snow and ice. In most cases, a homeowner or property owner cannot be held responsible for a winter slip and fall if reasonable effort has been made to clear naturally accumulating snow. For unnatural accumulations of snow or ice, such as a mound of snow from plowing or shoveling, a homeowner or business owner may be held liable for injuries that occur.
